I had no trouble reading this dark little story as an effective standalone piece, although it is a prequel to _Thieves at Heart_ which I have not yet read. Tarwater packs an impressive amount of world-building into this, especially considering that we're learning about an "adult" world through the eyes of small child. I'm looking forward to reading the novel.

Tavera (Nabs, child of the Blocks, ½ elf) met Madame Greswin an ancient crone (woman). Tavera worked for tradesman. Tavera was sold to her. Madame Greswin owned a sausages business in Fenwick. She liked to drink, could be mean & seemed to be losing her memory. Tavera job was to separate the bad/good meat & organs. The spice ingredients of course were a guarded secret. The sausage was later cooked & sold on the St. by a vendor. Later to thieves had come into the sausage shop. What would Madame Greswin do to Tavera for the mess that was made?
Adventure, mysterious short story (book). Cool book cover. What a great medieval schifi or paranormal twist. It would make a great movie or TV series. Very easy for me to give the short story (book) 5 stars.
Thank you for the free book (short story)
