Into the Fire

Rated 5.00/5 based on 2 reviews
This short story is the first adventure of Jason Curtis and his ship, the Starfire. In a not-too-distant future where small starships are as common as private jets, a skilled but impulsive pilot discovers it is often easier to get himself into trouble than to get out of it, and sometimes the only way out of the frying pan is . . . into the fire.

This story is a fun read. Just the right mix of hard science fiction (ie, the science) and good adventurous fun. I'll definitely be looking for more from this author.

This story is a fun read for those who like space adventure with a bit of thought behind it. One has to buy the premise of personal starships less than a century from now, but then it's been about that since the Wright Flyer, and now we have personal jets. The Jason Curtis character reminds me of Larry Niven's Beowulf Shaeffer, smart enough to get out of the trouble he gets himself into - eventually. This should appeal to fans of Niven's earlier stuff, and perhaps even fans of the Traveller RPG. Mayer has even hidden an easter egg referencing E. C. Tubb's Earl Dumarest series.
