About Susan May

Susan May decided she was a writer at four. Unfortunately, for the next 46 years she suffered from a common writer’s disease—life-gets-in-the-way-osis. In 2010 she discovered a cure—write a page a day no matter what. Since then she has churned out multiple short stories, many of which have become award winners and enjoyed publication.
Enthralled with any form of storytelling, Susan snared her dream job when she became a film and book reviewer for U.S. Suspense Magazine. You can find her several times a week in a darkened cinema with her hand in a popcorn bucket.
Her award winning short stories have appeared in U.S, U.K. and Australian publications. Susan built strong relationships with Australian publishers through her book reviewing and her dream was to partner with a major publisher to release her books.
After interviewing Hugh Howey the poster author for Indie publishing, she did her research and decided to turn her back on the idea of traditional publishing. Susan found herself top notch editors in New York, NY Book Editors, and released her first book, Behind the Fire in August 2013 as a self-published work.
She is currently working with David Gatewood (Hugh Howey’s editor) on several short story anthologies containing her award winning stories and previously unpublished gems. Three anthologies will be released in the final quarter of 2013.
By the end of 2013, Susan's readers will enjoy their first taste of ‘HUNGRY’, book one of an apocalyptic thriller series in which the majority of humankind develops a fatal allergy to genetically modified food. A terrified world suddenly finds itself faced with an epidemic of anaphylaxis deaths and food too dangerous to consume. Sustenance has become a guessing game. As the majority of the population faces extinction, the few who are immune become valuable commodities to the allergic survivors, and governments who are searching frantically for a solution.
Says Susan, “It’s an exciting publishing world now, and I am taking full advantage of it to entertain readers. Every day I pinch myself that I am able to do what I love and be in control of every facet of it. And I can wear my track suit pants and slippers while doing it. Bliss.”
Susan lives in Perth, Western Australia, with her best first reader, her husband, Franco, and their two young boys, Bailey and Harry. Her mind, however, ventures constantly into the dark crevices where all speculative writers create their strange worlds.
