Useless Tears

Rated 5.00/5 based on 1 reviews
Like the fabled unicorns, the Le'enle are often hunted for their magical bodies, to be distilled into potions and ground into powders to heal the sick and give powers to the mundane. When Agile Storm's mate dies on a distant world, he returns there to seek her killers... and justice. Originally published in The Leading Edge #45.

About M.C.A. Hogarth

Daughter of two Cuban political exiles, M.C.A. Hogarth was born a foreigner in the American melting pot and has had a fascination for the gaps in cultures and the bridges that span them ever since. She has been many things—-web database architect, product manager, technical writer and massage therapist—-but is currently a full-time parent, artist, writer and anthropologist to aliens, both human and otherwise.

Her fiction has variously been recommended for a Nebula, a finalist for the Spectrum, placed on the secondary Tiptree reading list and chosen for two best-of anthologies; her art has appeared in RPGs, magazines and on book covers.

Review by: Eric Hinkle on Feb. 16, 2011 :
This is short but not at all sweet story. MCA Hogarth often has elements of tragedy in her work, but this is a story that /is/ a tragedy -- an immortal slain for her blood and tears, and what becomes of both her mate and her slayer will shock you if you're used to other stories by this author. It might even anger you.

It is very, very well done for such a short piece. Like so many of Ms. Hogarth's stories, this story is a precious jewel, but one stained with tears and blood. Read it and see what real tragedy looks like when it's done by a real writer.
