The moment Fred Mayer had his first taste of finding real gold, he felt an overwhelming sense of excitement and soon knew that he would be a recreational gold panner for the rest of his life. A son of a gold miner, Fred grew up fascinated with mining sites, but he never had his first panning experience until he was 30. Being an outdoorsman, Fred goes hunting and fishing with his friends on weekends, until one of them invited him to try gold panning, and the rest is history. Now, he runs a specialty store selling equipment and gears for gold panning and related activities like prospecting and mining. During his free time, on weekends and holidays, Fred travels with his wife and fellow gold panners to try their luck on mining camps and other panning locations. His two sons have also caught an interest with the hobby and goes with them whenever they can. Gold panning has become a family adventure for the Mayers, but more than the prospect of finding gold, Fred and his family find the activity richly rewarding as they enjoy and treasure the wonderful experiences they have together while in the field.
