Extended description

This book contains detailed descriptions, drawings, and photos of the most popular wood mechanical movements found in current wood automata projects. A detailed set of plans is included in making your own wood gears. Photos are included wherever possible to show the various wood mechanical movements in use. The last section of the book is a complete set of detailed plans to build your own wood automata, which is a figure doing push-ups. Automata is a form of art. Some use it to build interesting automated wood mechanical art projects and others use it to make toys. Links are provided to offer ideas and to see what others have done. When I downloaded the ePub version for my Sony PRS-650, I was disappointed to find it contained a few minor formatting problems (font size inconsistencies). Putting that little niggle aside, I certainly found it a helpful introduction to the world of wood automata. However, I felt the price was a bit steep (for 31 pages), as this is the first time I have actually paid for an e-book - all the others that I have downloaded have been free. Nevertheless, it contains some interesting links and references to useful p-books (one of which I have now bought), so I suppose it was worth the price I paid. I do think though, there's little difference in quality between free e-books and ones like this that cost money, so things such as the links to the videos are an important inclusion (so long as the videos remain online). This e-book is quite well written, with clear instructions, and contains helpful drawings. I came away feeling motivated to have a go myself, so Ken Schweim has achieved his aim of encouraging others to take up this fascinating hobby.
