The life skills exercises are a means of addressing the needs of ASD affected children by making practical information related to the adaptive functioning of ASD children accessible to caregivers and professionals. This collection of exercises offers a vivid conceptualization of the Autism spectrum through the use of applied behavioral exercises that highlight development needs that are commonly observed within this population now estimated at 1 in 68 children within the United States. It goes without saying that all children are unique and therefore it may be most appropriate to select from the manual, specific exercises that map onto any development skill gaps perceived at a given age. All exercises can be used as well, with children developing along a more standard path. Not all children will be able to acquire the skills taught within a given exercise depending on individual needs and current functioning. It is not recommended that the exercises be experienced in the order presented here, and adjusting exercises to meet your child’s needs is encouraged.
The training manual exercises will also highlight how ASD children often conceptualize their world and how they may experience, and attempt to address, challenges that arise in their lives. The goal of the manual is to support the team involved in the life of the ASD child and to engage the child in fun and meaningful learning that transfers to behaviour change and further success for children, parents, and professionals.
