Francine the cat and Matthew the mouse are very unlikely friends. Fran is selfish, vain, and used to eating fresh fish. She acts like a princess, with a necklace of flowers adorning her neck and a crown on her head. Matt lives happily and simply in a dirty hole in the wall. One day, Fran's owner leaves to tend to a needy friend. When the cat discovers that Miss Mackay from the end of the street has forgotten to feed her, she becomes very angry. Despite Matt's warnings, Fran hastily eats some raw eggs, thinking that if humans can eat them, so can she. This results in an allergic reaction which causes her beautiful fur to fall out. For once, Fran feels ugly and vulnerable. The mischievous dog from next door hears the commotion, and tells Fran that her fur will grow back if she rubs honey on herself and then rolls in the dirt. Of course, this makes the poor cat look even worse. Through the caper, Fran learns that how she looks is not as important as how she behaves, and that it's what's on the inside that counts. She discovers that, despite her ugliness and bad attitude, she is still loved by her owner and Matt, and that vanity, impatience and greediness are not traits to be admired.
