Maris E. McCambley grew up in Philadelphia playing baseball, racing go-carts, jumping from Tarzan swings, and watching westerns with her two brothers. She left the big city as soon as she could and headed to Texas, where, as a newspaper reporter, she swam halfway across the Rio Grande River, interviewed a young singer named Reba McIntire, and photographed the Houston Oilers farm team games.
A chance encounter with the gallant Mountaineer who offered to change a flat tire for her, led to courtship, marriage, and a move to West Virginia. Before leaving Texas, the newlyweds found and adopted T.C., the little black and white kitten for whom the feline heroine of the author's first novel The Listener is named.
The author and her husband are living happily ever after in West Virginia. They share their home with two collies named Kylee and Cody, and a managerie of other pets that has included three horses, a Labrador retriever, five cats, and six kittens.
