Ebook short description

Disgusted by the pollution, traffic, and litter in his home valley, a box turtle is persuaded by a gray squirrel to travel to a mythical mountain, where the water is pure and the air still fresh. Joined by a raccoon, black snake, and a porcupine, Box Turtle withstands many hardships and dangers and finally makes it to the top of the mountain, where he meets a very wise red eft.

Extended description

This is an allegory for older children (ages 8-13 and up) about the environment and about spiritual life. Each of the animals wants peace and a clean place to live, but each one has his or her own idea about how and where to obtain them. It is a "hare and tortoise" story in that the turtle is slow but determined - and he is the one who learns the lesson of the arduous journey: we can't run away from home just because it isn't perfect; because we are part of what makes it a special place. We have to learn to see the good in where we are and strive to make it better.
