Divers Terry Hunter and her husband, ex-NYPD detective Joe Manetta, battle pirate whalers killing activists attempting to stop the hunt in the frigid North Atlantic.
Terry and Joe travel to Iceland to save the whales, but their involvement entangles them in a dangerous world of international politics, intrigue and murder, where fate has a surprise in store for them. More
The prologue opens in the Pacific, north of Hawaii. The crew of the Sea Angel, members of the environmental organization Peaceful Seas, has foiled Japanese whalers aboard the Hakudo Maru from killing whales, putting themselves in harm’s way between the whalers’ deadly harpoons and the whales. The following dawn, as the Sea Angel’s crew sleeps, an explosion sends the ship to the sea bottom. Responsibility for the Sea Angel’s sinking is a mystery, not resolved until the end of the book.
Recently married Terry Hunter and ex-NYPD detective Joe Manetta are running their Cozumel dive operation. Each has suffered past personal tragedy. Joe’s wife and children were killed in an auto accident in New York. A great white shark killed Terry’s fiancé during a research expedition off the California coast. Grateful that fate has thrown them together, they are trying to start a family but Terry cannot conceive following a miscarriage.
A chance encounter with a female dive customer from Holland leads them on an amazing adventure diving with humpback whales in the Dominican Republic. During the trip they learn a rogue sea captain is illegally hunting whales in the north Atlantic, and several Peaceful Seas members have been killed attempting to stop the hunt.
Against this background, Japan, Iceland, Finland and Norway are conspiring to overturn the International Whaling Commission’s commercial whaling ban during the organization’s upcoming annual meeting in Iceland. Terry and Joe travel to Iceland offering Peaceful Seas their assistance. Their involvement enmeshes them in a dark world of international politics, intrigue, and murder.
Risking their lives, Terry and Joe prove who sunk the Sea Angel, bring the killers to justice and foil the international plot to resume whaling. In gratitude, Peaceful Seas treats Terry and Joe to several nights at a romantic luxury resort before they return to Cozumel. Two months later, during a routine medical examination, Terry get some surprising news. She reflects on the role fate has played in her life: that a chance encounter with a dive customer in Cozumel led the couple on a globetrotting odyssey, resulting in a magical, romantic night in Iceland.
Reviews for Whales’ Angels:
“In his sequel to Dangerous Waters, Paul Mila has crafted another exciting adventure-mystery featuring Terry Hunter and Joe Manetta. Mila skillfully combines an intricate mystery plot with engaging characters and insights from a different culture, allowing his readers to experience the world from a novel perspective: that of the whales and dolphins who inhabit three-quarters of our planet. Don’t miss this one!”
Judith Hemenway, author of The Universe Next Door.
“A solid plot, intriguing characters and a realistic depiction of scuba diving and marine creatures are the hallmarks of Paul Mila’s second novel featuring Terry Hunter and Joe Manetta. This time out, Terry and Joe get involved with a group of activists (“Angels”) attempting to prevent a rogue sea captain from harpooning whales in the chilly waters off Iceland. Trying to save a whale, one of the Angels ends up dead — but was it really an accident? The resolution of the mystery will keep readers —divers and non divers alike — on the edge of their seats.”
