If I were to write a review using only one word, the word I would choose for "When the Tiger Roars" is "wow!!!"

The story itself revolves around a seemingly ordinary town with an extraordinary occurrence and a great adventure ensues. The imagery is fantastic and the story will likely draw you in!

I recommend this book to any and all!

This is a wonderful story about growing up and the changing relationships with friends, as well as the art of rediscovering your childhood world. All the characters were artfully developed and the story held that one quality that is so important in a good story - the element of suspense. I was intrigued from the start, wondering about these two boys seeking the tiger that had beset their town, and the story unfolded beautifully. Pavithra Rao is a great new writer to watch!

Review by: Lisa Mary MacNair on July 31, 2011 :
When the Tiger Roars" by Pavithra Rao is an engaging story with a child protagonist, a suspenseful energy, and a wonderfully clever, twisting narrative. Two adolescent friends are caught up in a panic of their small town when burglaries begin to occur, which seem to be predicted by the roar of a tiger looming in the woods on the town's edge. It is mystery to be solved, and when the two boys set out to solve it, differences between the two boys become clear. They are different in temperament, curiosity, courage, upbringing, and socioeconomic background, and these differences emerge powerfully when it seems solving the mystery of the tiger in the woods is possible. The style of Ms. Rao is deceptively simple but rich, and the pace of the narrative pitch-perfect. She creates a detailed atmosphere that becomes appropriately claustrophobic until the excellent twist of an ending. An excellent read for YA readers and adults as well. I enjoyed it immensely.
