Description

When Karsten accepted the role of Steadfast, he knew not that he would get saddled with a stubborn, angry, young woman whom he could trust not with his life nor the secret of his mission. Arialla so desired to escape Kellok's Crossing that she accepted a man she believed both without honour and a coward. Yea, and superstitious, for who but a child believed in Lehr Cats, Woodsies and sorcery?

After reading Courtesan I thought I would give this one a try. I read the free preview... Then bought the book and kept reading. By the end of the evening I had finished the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. As a newly married man I found some of the themes and scenarios in the book very appropriate and insightful.

The main characters - Karsten and Arialla have quite a few layers to their personalities and histories, with several nice reveals throughout the entire story.

While there are worldly events, this is a very character-driven story that I recommend giving a read. Hopefully D. A. Boulter can find another exciting adventure in this world - be it with the survivors of this book, or some other characters... I'd love to hear more about Degan & his wife.
