Who could resist a novel involving a "tramp steamer?" Certainly I couldn't and therefore enjoyed reading "Siren's Song" by independent author Wayne Tripp. The subject matter alone inspires a three star review.
The story opens with a present day passage where three adventurers travel to the deserts of New Mexico together to find the recluse Captain of the "Siren" in hopes of uncovering some of the mysteries of the sunken vessel. In this passage it isn't yet clear what the relationships are between the three characters. They emerge again in the back half of the novel and frame a well-written history of events that took place in the earlier times aboard the fated ship.
The author clearly has credibility with respect to nautical history, WWI history, and the SCUBA specialty of wreck diving. Don't expect complex characters though. The main characters, with the exception of Ross McCleod, aren't very well developed and their behaviors and relationships seemed forced and cliche. In fact, the three that are introduced in the opening passage and emerge later on seem shallow and cookie cut right out of a wharf side honky tonk bar and grill.
Regardless, the story draws the reader in and the plot is filled with action and moves the reader along. To enjoy a romp on the sea with a little adventure beneath the waves, reading Wayne Tripp's nautical yarn is a good distraction.
