Happy Thursday! My book review today is on The Vampire Castle by author Malla Duncan. This is book one in The Shadow Garden series. I am a huge fan of Malla Duncan. She is a very sweet, supportive author who always makes time for a kind word for others. It was a pleasure to read some of her work. This would make a great read for children ages ten and up.

The Vampire Castle reminded me of Alice in Wonderland with Tim Burton characters. It is a mixture of fantasy and paranormal genres with a little spookiness thrown in. The main character, Elspeth, is living at a boarding school while her mother tries desperately to find a job and make a home for them. Elspeth is special, although she doesn't know this. One day, a mysterious lady shows up to take Elspeth to stay with a grandfather she never she had. After that, the fantastical adventures start... Who are the crazy people she is staying with? Are they magic? Does Elspeth also have powers?

I loved the characters in this book. I have to say that Elspeth and Nigel were my favorites, but the author describes them all so well, I could clearly picture them in my mind. Each character has their own personality and features that shine through in this fairy tale. Her richly decorated settings in this book were phenomenal, as well. The only complaint I have is that I wanted more information about the background on some of the characters. What exactly are these people and where do they originate from? However, this is the first book in a series and I am sure more answers will be given in the following stories. I'm just very impatient! -smile :)

I can't wait to read more about Elspeth and her new friends with the color-changing eyes and amazing powers! I hope Ms. Duncan will hurry with the second book (hint-hint)! If it is anything like her first, we should all be prepared for an astounding journey!
