Evaleen the Queen is about a young girl in the depression era who comes from nothing and through hard work and determination, is able to create (from her grandmother's recipe) and sell a successful line of skin cream. She finds the strength to get through this process with a baby, a not-always supportive husband, the tragic loss of a good friend, and the addition of that friend's little girl to her family! I'm not done reading yet, but there's lots happening in this very interesting story.

First of all, let me admit this: I am a grumpy, critical reader/writer who can find fault with most fiction. I also don't read many romances. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised by Rector's novel. The characters are well-rounded, for the most part, and the author has a talent for short, pithy character descriptions. I very much liked the Depression-era plotting and descriptions. I came to care about the characters, even Hero, a man of less than stellar qualities. My main complaint has a silver lining. The second part of the book seemed a little rushed. This is a good thing, really. I wanted to stay with the characters in a fully elaborated passage of time, with more detail like the Depression times. All in all, a good read.

I enjoyed reading about Eva Ryan's struggles to overcome her insecurities and what she did to change herself to become a huge success. I found the book VERY inspirational. A good book for anyone looking for ideas on how to change their life. A good read!
