About James McLaughlin

His lifelong love of reading coupled with an overactive imagination fueled the creation of Jim McLaughlin's novels. Starting with comic books as a kid, Jim is never without a good book at his side. A career move to Chicago was the spark that ignited the story behind "The James Charade". The economic downturn set in motion the central theme in "The Leveler". "Two Billion Reasons to Kill???" features Burton James, the popular character first introduced to the world in "The James Charade".

Born in Iowa and raised in Prairie Village, Kansas, Jim spent the majority of his career in the medical equipment industry, working for large companies before plunging headfirst into the wonderful world of entrepreneurship by starting and selling two successful medical equipment businesses in the Kansas City area.

Now retired, Jim spends his time reading and writing. He loves to travel with his wife, is addicted to water sports, is lousy at golf but still likes to play, and spends his spare time in his bead studio where he practices the age old art of lampwork.

Jim's favorite authors are Catherine Coulter (www.catherinecoulter.com), Lawrence Sanders (may God rest his soul), and Robert B. Parker (now writing in Heaven with Lawrence Sanders).

I read only fiction, and this is by far one of the best books I've read in a long time. This is my first smashwords read but it definitely won't be my last. Especially nice that the author shared his work for free.

"The Leveler" reminded me a lot of John Sandford's earlier "Prey" books. Filled with tension, McLaughlin's book will keep you on the edge of your seat."

I've read The James Charade by McLaughlin as well and I can hardly wait for him to finish book #3. You, Mr. Jim, are a word wizard and literary master!

I've read both smashword novels by James McLaughlin. While I thoroughly enjoyed The James Charade, The Leveler was much more my style. A lot of action and some top-notch police work. Loved it!!!

This book is hard to define. I wasn't quite sure where the author was taking me, but once I read the prologue I just had to read more. I especially liked the heroine in the story, Bebe Lawless. She demonstrates qualities that almost any lady will admire. The central theme of the book was somewhat disturbing but very believeable.

The second half of The Leveler wasn't as strong as the first part. But the entire premise of a rookie detective being allowed to head up the investigation of a multiple murder case is far fetched. When the rookie made critical errors in judgment early on department politics would have demanded her replacement. Editing is fair with minor spelling and missing / extra word errors. Some of the dialog was strained and un-natural, too formal and detached.
