Slumgullion Sector

Rated 3.50/5 based on 3 reviews
I’d been sitting at Doyle’s Clam House for an hour, and no one had gotten around to being kidnapped by aliens yet.

I had a bowl of what the guide books called the best chowder north of Bodega Bay on one side, and a redhead who’d make Raymond Chandler dive for his thesaurus on the other.

No one told me that I'd get to witness something right out of the Star Wars cantina scene that evening. More

Michael Angel’s worlds of contemporary fantasy range from the unicorn-ruled world of the Morning Land to the gritty underside of Los Angeles. Author of the bestselling Centaur of the Crime – where C.S. Lewis meets CSI – his books populate shelves in languages from Russian to Portuguese.

He currently resides in Southern California. Alas, despite keeping a keen eye out for griffins, centaurs, or pegasi, none have yet put in an appearance on Hollywood Boulevard.

Food critic Darwin doesn't expect much from Doyle's, a seafood restaurant on the Oregon coast. But his friend Patience -- a mysterious redhaired minx -- insists he just has to try the slumgullion.

Little does Darwin know that Doyle's slumgullion isn't just the best in the state... it's the best in the galaxy.

An unexpected encounter in the men's room catapults Darwin into a universe he never dreamed of, and launches the reader into an inventive science fiction shoot-'em-up with a lighthearted tone that left this reviewer smiling. Darwin's first-person narration evokes a hard-boiled atmosphere that shouldn't work with the fun mood of the story, but does. If there isn't already a genre called comic science-fiction noir, Michael Angel has just invented it.

Five stars, minus one for being too short! In compensation, this ebook includes a long excerpt from Angel's space western novel THE ADVENTURES OF AMANDA LOVE, co-written with Devlin Church.

A short story that sort of reminds me of "Guy Noir, Private Eye" from "A Prairie Home Companion."
