Extended description

A noir-ish short story about a would-be gangster and what happens when he gets the chance he's been looking for to prove himself to the Big Boss. But does he have the stomach for it? Better yet, is being "one of the boys" what he had in mind?

Originally published in Hardboiled Magazine, issue #32, 2004.

Contains some suggestive language but overall suitable for ages 16 and up.

Inspired by the works and words of Mickey Spillane.

The author freely admits the writing style isn't her own, which makes the stale noir narration sort of forgivable. However, this writer is capable of bringing so much more than the regular bag of tricks to a genre, which she's demonstrated in her YA work. But rather than altering the traditional, Spillane-esque feel to something less obvious, I think Riley should have been over the top noir--like he seems to assume his role models are--until he realizes that the life he's always wanted isn't glamorous like the movies.
Speaking of those ''role models,'' I really wanted backstories. I wanted to know how these men came into the business, or if not that, at least an anecdote about something they did to attain the reputations they have. There is so much potential in this story. While this isn't the type of fiction this author is known for, I hope she decides to revise it.
One last thing: there were a lot of typos, especially toward the beginning. My favorite was ''colorful steaks of light.''

A good amount of characterization was achieved in 2400 short words. The story played out like a noir gangster film in my mind while I read it and I'd love to read more about this 'hardboiled' gangster and his mob associates.

It's really hard to rate a story of only 2400 words; there is minimal time to develop characters or plot and issues like flow and continuity are almost non existent. Having said that, the author of One of The Boys managed to pull it off. Plus the editing is good; what more can you ask for?
