Here's how it opens:

"Those who find themselves driven, either by wanderlust or an abiding sense of nostalgia, to wander past the beaten roads of Arizona may one day come upon the town of Gaston. Or at least what’s left of it. When the silver mines began to close and the rails of the Southern Pacific stretched across the territory to Yuma, the town commenced a slow and lingering death.
By the turn of the twentieth century, its once bustling streets lied empty and still. Its hotels, bars, and bawdy houses were picked clean by the souvenir hunters and left to dry and crumble in the withering sun. Those who had lived and died in Gaston were now nothing more than ghosts. They told their stories only to those who stopped to listen to the soughing of the wind across the desert, only to those who stood to watch the tracery of the crows against the sunset, only to those who paused to mark the tortured twisting of the ironwood to heaven."

The story turns to the ghost of Pierce Bolton, a banker who arrive in town only to be shot dead in a bar his first night. His lovely fiance, Meredith L. Brockton, is in Boston. She receives word of his death by telegraph, has his remains shipped back to Boston for burial, and is not happy. In fact, Meredith cannot rest until she avenges her fiance's death, and thereby hangs the tale.
