All plant and animal life is gone in an instant, and all human life ages 50 years. The stars change, signaling the Earth has traveled to a new location. The survivors are faced with two daunting tasks; how do they recover from disaster, and how can they prevent another from happening again?
Brian is a Prototype; a fourteen year old child, born shortly after Countdown, with chemically enhanced intelligence. He, and other children like him, work on preparing a Space Shuttle for launch to confront the aliens believed responsible for the tragedy. They live in the Homestead; one of the last communities of humans on Earth. Brian faces a father who despises the opportunities he has, a father born to be a Grunt; a class of people whose only function is to procreate and cleanse the cities of the plentiful dead. Bri.. Brian was brought up learning philosophy and ethics, morality and reason, but as he matures, he finds they have little place in a world that uses the dead for mulch.
In Regeneration, the first book in the series; Seventh Age of Man, Brian must overcome his meek nature if he is to gain control of the Archetypes, and the Homestead itself. Charlie is now the default leader; one of the few surviving adults from pre-Countdown. Charlie fights with the Deaconess, a woman who tries to bring religion to the Grunts so she might use them as her personal army. Brian must gain Charlie’s trust if he is ever to learn the secrets of the Homestead, and must defeat the Deaconess in battle to prove his mettle. He must gain the loyalty of Gustav, leader of the soldier-class called Archetypes, if he is to have any hope of enforcing his rule. But most of all he must confront and defeat his father, whose tyranny has kept him weak and timid all his life. This is the Seventh Age of Man, and there is no guarantee there will be an Eighth. The series continues with the second book, Maturation, and concludes in the third book, Dessication.
