The author says: "The Survivor" is not a good introduction to "IDITAROD". It was removed from the novel because it wasn't a good fit. Better to view it as a self-standing short story parallel to Iditarod. Also, while "IDITAROD" has an appeal to young adults, "The Survivor" might give them nightmares, which is why it was removed from the original manuscript. Read at your own risk!
