After arriving in the nation’s capitol, she meets Walt Whitman, who inspires her to write a novel about slavery. When a soldier and former slave named Tinker, who is a friend of hers, receives a ceremonial medal from Lincoln, she is convinced the President will free slaves throughout the land. After witnessing his assassination in Ford’s Theater, she gives up her cause, but later she opens her door to an unexpected visitor, giving her hope for the future.
