Short description

Exposing the hidden seams between Borges and Roald Dahl, The Mendicant is a short story of a life lost and a beauty too terrible to endure.

Extended description

From a distance Icarus could have been a giant crow. His long crooked nose almost met with his bottom row of teeth and he pecked at the salty chips in the newspaper without raising them to his mouth.

With sudden awkward jerks of his head Icarus watched the slow approach of the straw men. One of them glowered at him from the back of the side show further down the pier, staring at him with such a fury that Icarus began to shake.

But Icarus had other things on his mind. Tonight was going to be a clear night. And on every clear night, when a thousand stars shine it sings; for it is on clear nights that the fallen angel in Icarus' mouth is tormented by the full glory of the firmament to which it will never return. And so it weeps and it sings of heaven.

Exposing the hidden seams between Borges and Roald Dahl, The Mendicant is a short story of a life lost and a beauty too terrible to endure.
