A body is found on a beach after the worst cyclone to hit the North-East coast of Australia in more than 100 years. The body is found to be alive – but only just – and is identified as that of Anton Webster, the architect. The Webster Chronicles tells the remarkable story of his rise and fall. More
Anton is passionately in love with Marion, but remains uncommitted because he cannot stand her parents nor they him. Zak, a wealthy property developer, tempts Anton away from his work as a government architect and pays him for elaborate presentations to convince the authorities to accept environmentally unsound projects. Marion decides to marry someone else. Anton pays Lesley, a very exclusive courtesan, to attend her wedding as a joke. The joke turns bad when Lesley takes over his life and uses him as a stepping stone for her own ambitions. Anton designs a fairytale castle for Zak and becomes the architect of the moment. He is liberated from his slavish development work and is able to spend some time on his favourite topic of how to deal with climate change. He dreams of a high speed rail link, complete with elaborate transport interchanges, between the nation’s capital cities and a solar tower, which is to become the tallest structure on Earth. Zak allows him to build an economy version of the rail link and offers to partly fund the solar tower, but wants him back to work on more mundane and commercially viable projects. Things unravel when Zak disappears on a business trip to Russia and Anton is found only just alive after the cyclone. His life hangs in the balance.
