At first sight this is a simple story of a theft from an English stately home, but instead of being a straightforward narrative it is told by way of a series of newspaper articles from local and national papers, tabloids and other media. This leaves the reader to make his own decisions about the accuracy of the reporting and about what could have been reported but has, for whatever reason, been left out.
Not every journalist is as conscientious as he might be – the demands of working to deadlines make this inevitable – and many may have their view of events coloured by personal opinion, the political leaning of their employer or even complete unknowns, such as having a toothache whilst writing a story.
Once the reader has read the stories he has some questions to answer: is the alleged perpetrator guilty, was there indeed a crime at all, and who, if there are any, are the real villains?
It is a different and fascinating way of telling a quite simple story, and one that will exerc.. (Read more)
