My passion for writing began while growing up in rural Belle Chasse, Louisiana, with fifty acres surrounding our home and no neighbors nearby. With no siblings (until much later) or neighborhood children in the area-I turned to my imagination for fun.
I'd often lie outside on the grass and envision what the cloud shapes were. Then I'd either traipse around our backyard looking for cow bones or haul my library books up into my tree house. The magical words transported me like a nomad traveler to so many worlds. Sprawled out on the wooden planks in my tree house clutching another book, I felt my inner muse awaken.
In the third grade I began writing stories about make-believe friends and their adventures on the backs of my Dad's business accounting ledgers. I'd even call my Aunt Myrtle who lived in New Orleans to read her my stories. I'm not sure if she really listened to them. Yet I remember when I finished she'd say, "Suzan, you have such a gift for writing. You must write some more." So I did...
Later, as a young girl, I observed how my mother did not stand up for herself or me when my father turned violent due to an undiagnosed bipolar condition. Then in my 20's I watched my mother die young, 51, as a brittle diabetic who neglected her self-care. As a result I am now a women's health advocate.
My writing focuses on women putting their health (emotional, physical, and spiritual) FIRST and becoming resilient. Women at P.L.A.Y! (Peace, Love, and Acceptance of Yourself after 40) is my first published book. I've been the contributing author and editor of several women's health-related books as well as numerous print and online publications including the AARP Bulletin. One of my personal essays, Mom's Pink Robe, received an award in the annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition.
Another way I serve women is through speaking to women's groups and offering individual and group coaching programs called playshops. I'm a certified life coach through the Coaches Training Institute, an internationally accredited Behavioral Sciences program. I recently attained a certification as a Health and Wellness Coach from Wellcoaches. I've been privileged to work with hundreds of women to help them positively transform their health and well-being.
Aside from supporting women through writing, speaking, and facilitating playshops, I most enjoy being a life adventurer. My travels have taken me to such remote places as the Inca Trail in Peru, the Himalayas in Nepal, as well as Kenya, Tanzania, and Egypt in Africa. Earlier this year my husband and I fulfilled a life dream to travel throughout the South Pacific for 3.5 months. You are welcome to visit our travel site: www.WeBeNomads.com
An avid hiker, I married Jim McNeil on the peak of Mount Whitney (14,495 feet). I would love to hear from you. You can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit my site: www.SuzanTusson.com.
