How I got this book: From the author

James and Olivia Forster have been happily married for many years. A harmless kink here or there spices up their love life, but they can’t imagine the kinks they’ll encounter while sneaking off to their beach house for a long hot weekend.

Anso Vitul has ruled the wereseals for one short month. He hardly needs his authority questioned because he’s going crazy from mating heat. Anso’s best friend and male lover Ty offers to help him find the human mate his genes are seeking. To Ty’s amazement, Anso’s quest leads him claim not one partner but a pair. Ty would object, except he too finds the Forsters hopelessly attractive.
I got this blurb from the author’s website here.

Hidden Depths is the second in Ms Holly’s Hidden world following after Hidden Talents which I reviewed here. Unlike the majority of other series I read, which are set in the same world and have some reoccurring characters or events that provide continuity, this seemed much more of a standalone novel. Yes, it was set in the same world but dealt primarily with a different species and environment not to mention an entirely different theme. I will admit when I read the blurb and saw that this featured a married couple I had my doubts but I should have trusted that Ms Holly would make it work.

Ms Holly does not pull any erotic punches with the main characters coming on scene and pretty quickly enjoying an intimate moment with their respective partner. Those encounters displayed not only what types of things the characters enjoyed but also the emotional trust and caring they had within their relationships. I think their caring relationships were the key that allowed the merging of the couples to work. If any individual had been less committed to their partner’s happiness I think the outcome would have been entirely different. I liked that while Ms Holly did use the ‘fated mate’ trope she did not use that trope as the final solution but as the reason for meeting. I also liked how both James and Olivia experienced what the wereseals could give them at the same time but in separate locations. That continued to keep them on an even level with their relationship with each other.

The inclusion of several twists in this story helped elevate it above the increasingly more familiar multi-partner erotic romance. The woman scorned, while determined to get her own back, did not go down the typically well-worn path. As I mentioned earlier the idea of fated mates was not the ultimate answer. Ms Holly also did not make the focus of this as three close male friends/relatives all interested in sharing a single female but more about four people initially two separate couples building a relationship with each other. And then there was the setting…I have always be fascinated with the sea and this certainly fed my imagination. The wereseal world was full of some pretty intriguing creatures and seascapes. I wish we could have explored it and some of the wereseal culture a bit more.

My only quibble is that it seemed some things were accepted a bit too easily not just by the main characters but by the entire ensemble as a whole. Aside from the group of dissenters, which included “the woman scored”, everyone else went along with and loved what James and Olivia brought to their world.

I give Hidden Depths a B

Hidden Depths is an intriguing paranormal story with a diverse group of paranormal creatures written by the Queen of Steam, Emma Holly. It focuses of the unique world of the wereseals, a world full of magic and mythological creatures. Their world has some similarities to ours and is ruled by royalty.

Into this magical world, the Forsters' are thrown. And with a marriage that was looking for a little something to spice it up, they get more than they expected. James and Olivia are extremely loving but are open-minded to other possibilities. They don't see these other possibilities as damaging to their relationship though. They're secure enough in their bond to experiment.

Enter newly-crowned King Anso. He feels the weight of his new responsibilities at the same time as his body's need to mate with the one nature chooses for him. It's led him to kidnapping Olivia and bringing her to his world to become Queen. Up until now, his only sexual experiences have been with men per their culture. Once he finds Olivia though, he has no intention of giving her up. No amount of political maneuverings or other's jealousy will sway him. He's lucky to have his long time lover Ty to support his decisions and to add strength to his new relationship. Both of these men are strong and sexy and I can understand why Olivia and James became so enamored with them. Anso is the more serious of the two with a wall surrounding him. Ty is the joker, thought of as lower class because of his lineage and long list of conquests, but he's extremely likable and loyal to his true love Anso.

Olivia and Anso get together immediately upon meeting and it's extremely hot, as is every other time they're together. James and Ty also get together quickly. Their scenes are steamy as well and even though things happen quickly they're still believable. All the sexual interludes are hot and vary between m/f, m/m, m/f/m, and a menage amongst all four of them. These scenes occur frequently and at times overwhelmed the storyline. I wish there was a bit more character development, particularly with the villain who was very stereotypical and one-dimensional, and a bit less sex.

The world of the wereseals is unique and eye-catching. It has some elements of the human world but is much more exotic. There's magic and dragons and other kinds of creatures existing in their world who try not to enter the human realm. Once Olivia is made Queen though the interactions have to happen since they have a daughter. This opens up all sorts of storyline possibilities for future books.

This was a sexually intense book set in a visually intriguing world. The sexual interludes are steamy and creative and very unique to Ms. Holly. This book is part of a series but it can easily be read on it's own. For those looking for something a bit out of the ordinary look no further than Hidden Depths.

Emma Holly is a brilliant writer. Her books are always sexy, but what I like most are her unforgettable characters. I became really invested in James and Olivia's marriage and they way they related to Anso and Ty, and when the relationships blended and changed I saw the emotional conflict. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone legal to read it. And - bonus - it has a sequel! I love sequels!

The name of Emma Holly must ring a bell to every romance lovers and for me I met Emma Holly with her Victorian historical (MF), Beyond Innocence. I must admit that I lost track of Emma Holly but it came back when I remembered she published Ménage which is still in my to-do read.

So my mind was set on this Victorian romance I read a long time ago and I remembered that her sex scenes were hot and her writing easy to read. When I read the excerpt of Hidden Depths and saw it was a ménage MMMF, I was surprised that she was not a mainstream author as I thought but an erotica author and got very intrigued to read her.

The story itself is not very credible I must say but hey! this is a paranormal story so of course it has some parts that cannot be. However, the story is very easy to read and I never wanted to skip pages whatsoever.

So we have two humans, Olivia and James, very much in love at 40, which is already strange but possible and we have on the other side one were-seal and one were-otari, Anso and Ty, which is also very strange in a good way because so far the only were-seal I read was in Laurel K. Hamilton in her Merry Gentry series. Kudos for Emma Holly for creating new weres! ;)

I will not resume the story. It would spoiled everything. However, I will suggest that to keep a mind right opened because credibility is not really in this story. I thought that the acceptance of this new world was way too quick for me. I would have loved more development, more tension maybe. We also have a plot in the background but very predictable. Here also, I would have preferred to be kept on my toes.

This ménage is about three bisexual guys and one woman. All three are virgins one way or another. Again I will not explain in details. In a way it is a true foursome in romance because they all fall in love with each other but we never read a true foursome sex scenes: they are all in the same bed but it is either a MM, a MF even a MMF with one looking. I was a bit surprised at that because Emma Holly is sure not shy to describe the MM sex scenes so why not a dual penetration and a BJ at the same time? I am not sure. But you will not read sex scenes very detailed. It is still hot but not steamy with much details.

Another point that has nothing to do with the story but bothered me. Instead of having a 298 pages, excluding the two very long excerpt at the end, the story is only 255 pages. 43 pages of excerpt is way too much in my opinion.

The cover is nice but does not reflect the story at all besides seeing a nice torso in front of the sea. We have no idea if it is paranormal, we have no idea it is a menage, we have no idea that the majority of the story is under sea with magical beings.

Overall, I liked this story very much. I spent a good time reading it. I could have rated it 3.5 because the plot was not strong enough but since I thought it was a very original paranormal were story and well written, this book definitely deserve a 4. I was open minded and was not expecting a thriller or anything. I thought that Emma Holly has a very easy way to describe her world. The male characters are very endearing. I enjoy my time reading this story and will sure check her other MMF stories because if you check her blog, you'll be maybe as surprised as myself how many she wrote!

This was a truly fantastic read! Ms. Holly will turn the shape-shifting world on their respective ears! I read this book in one sitting, and girls, I am here to tell you that this book is smokin', HAWT! You are going to need a very large glass of water while reading this one, just to put out the enter fires! Ms. Holly's characters are mature adults that are comfortable with their sexuality and not shy about asking and getting what they want. I loved Olivia, her character seemed like a very nurturing and positive force, she kept the scales balanced between her needs and that of her "men". James, Olivia's husband was almost to good to be true, and seemed to take a backseat in the story. Anso, was very charismatic and charming, but the stand out in this book for me was Ty! In the end I was rooting for his happiness in a cast of forceful personalities, I loved the twist and turns during this book and kept my interest throughout, and I loved her world building! Ms. Holly has been a favorite of mine for a long time and I always relish one of books coming out and they are always on my TBR list! If you enjoy Emma Holly's Demon world, you'll love this book! I give it 5 of 5 stars! For more on this or anything that Ms. Holly writes, please visit her web site for more info! Happy reading!

Review by: Tyra Berger on Oct. 20, 2011 :
Emma Holly is the Queen of erotic romance! She blends hot sex and emotional feelings better than just about anyone. The story she pens in Hidden Depths was the perfect blend of both.
Shortly after the death of his father, the king of the wereseals, Anso feels the undeniable call to find his mate. Taking his lover Ty and two other guards he sets out to find her. What he finds is his true blood mate lying on a beach asleep in the arms of another man, but it’s not just any man it’s her husband. Ordering both be taken back to Oceana he claims he will find a solution there.

Olivia and her husband, James, of twenty years have a good marriage and a healthy sex life. Lately though Olivia wonders if her husband is craving something more in their relationship. The two are deeply in love and can talk to each other about anything, but when she questions him he evades the topic. When she wakes from a nap on the beach after a bout of sex with James she finds herself in the arms of a stranger and her husband being dragged behind her by three other men. She is scared but there is something about the man that feels right.

Claiming his throne and his true blood mate, dealing with royal politics, an angry husband and a disgruntled lover might be too much for most men. But then they wouldn’t be King Anso Vitul.

I have to admit I was a little skeptical at the beginning of this book. Olivia and James have such a deep devotion to each other I wasn’t sure I would like bringing anyone else into their relationship. But when you have fate and an otherworldly connection on your side it makes things a little easier. There are a lot of unfulfilled needs for each person in the beginning of this story be it sexually or emotionally, that once brought to light made going forward easier. I felt there was a good balance of plot line, sex and emotions to keep the story moving.

The sex scenes are scorching hot with a capital “H”, so when you start this book make sure you are not sitting in the doctor’s office waiting room or someplace like that. You may want to save this for a quiet evening at home with a nice glass of wine to drink and tall glass of ice water to pour over you when you start to heat up. The story is captivating and one that you will not want to put down once you have started it. So if you like your romances with hot men and even hotter sex with just a bit of kink thrown in,then Hidden Depths is one you won't want to miss.

Hidden Depths by Emma Holly
The fae have created a pocket between our world and theirs where magic can exist. We were introduced to part of that pocket in Hidden Talents where we met the hunky werewolves of the Resurrection Police Dept. (Whom I hope we shall revisit sometime soon please). In Hidden Depths we meet the were-seals of Oceana.
The king is dead long live the king. The new King Anso of Oceana is hit hard with the mating heat and takes his lover Ty and two guards to search for his mate. Much to his dismay he finds her making love to her husband on the beach. The mating heat is on him and he can’t not take her so he takes her husband too to make her kidnapping easier on her. There is a chain reaction of chemical and physical attraction between the new king, his lover Ty, James and Olivia Forster. It seems the mating heat affects them all. Trying to deal with it and its ramifications while trying to shore up his political standing among those who seek to use or remove the new king makes for a great read.
I don’t know how Emma Holly does it but I hope she keeps on doing it. This is a smoking HOT read and a great story. Warning: scorching mm, mf, & mmmf sex under the seas.
