After barely surviving a battle with nearly impossible odds, the Natan Fleet is trashed and must be rebuilt almost from scratch. Rumors that Natan is dead force Emperor Daharn to send Vathion away to investigate the validity of Toudon being used as a hiding spot by the Rebel commander, Ha'Likka. When he captures a Rebel courier ship, events are set in motion that reveal Natan's killer and Vathion is captured.
