The Long Road to Baghdad was one of the first books I wrote. Various agents and editors gave me feedback along the lines of “Love the characters, love the plot hate the background. No one wants to know about the First World War in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq).” Something I found odd given the recent conflicts that covered the same ground British troops fought on in 1914-1920.
The Long Road to Baghdad is indirectly responsible for my first published historical novel, Hearts of Gold. An editor who read it, commissioned me to write a book set in Wales in the 1930’s and started me on my career.
Despite the criticism, I have never entirely abandoned or forgotten the book, possibly because my imagination was fired by the stories of Christopher Marley a survivor of the campaign. Given the success of One Last Summer, another of my books that lay in a drawer unread for over ten years, I have decided to post The Long Road to Baghdad as an e-book.
