Review by: trish dechant on Jan. 13, 2012 :
There isn't a Donna Grant book that I do not like. EVER. She is such a brilliant writer of historical romance-and Shadow Magic is NO exception.

Serena, a cursed witch, can see the future. And the future for friends Gerar, his wife, and new baby is one that ends in death.
Drogan, a fierce warrior, struggles to fight back the darkness that consumes his very soul.

Together, the two stand against evil and fight to chnage the fate of a family-and ultimately, fight to save the promise of a future together.
This steamy paranormal romance is filled with magic, both good and evil, and dark secrets that threaten to keep the lovers apart. And Donna Grant weaves a tale with vivid detail, smexy lovin', and twists that keep you on your toes. The only bad part? You want more.

a past soaked in sin and darkness closing in around him to claim his soul, DrWith ogan only wants to live his live in solitude. Years in the king’s service and his numerous deeds directed by the crown have left Drogan with horrendous nightmares and immeasurable guilt…

Serena is a witch, cursed and forever alone. She accepts her future. Until she meets Drogan. With Drogan a passion deep an unyielding awakens inside her. She is willing to sacrifice for his love, but can he put his past to rest and embrace the future?

MY THOUGHTS

Shadow Magic by Donna Grant was a wonderful read. I love stories where people are willing to sacrifice themselves for the ones they love. Dark Magic delivered that in spades. I really enjoyed the story. No matter how afraid Serena was, her love for Drogan conquered it and no matter how much Drogan thought the darkness would consume him, Serena proved to him that the one thing that always destroys evil is love. Shadow Magic held my attention until the last page. The book was everything a romance should be.

A malevolent force seeks the destruction of Drogan, the king's knight who is haunted by his participation in an evil act. Drogan joins forces with a beautiful and cursed witch, Serena. Love will find them along the way in this creatively twisting and turning tale. Donna Grant understands her characters well and stays true to who they are and how falling in love transforms them. "Shadow Mist" is sensual, well-paced, and sweeps the reader along. Unfortunately it also has some typographical errors and skipped words. For that reason I rate the book 4 stars. Even with the mistakes, the story itself is well-worth the time and sets up an appealing arch in the Sisters of Magic trilogy (although the Drogan/Serena romance fares well as a stand-alone story). Just be forewarned if you are the type of reader who is distracted and pulled out of a story by typos. Hopefully the next book, "Echoes of Magic", had a more detailed proofreading.

Serena of Hawthorne is a witch that has been cursed. Serena knows that her future entails her being alone. She has accepted her future even if she wishes there was a way to change that. That was before she saw Drogan and started wanting more than she has let herself want before. Now that he has stirred a passion in her that will not be denied she has to decide what she can live with and accept.

Drogan of Wolfglynn has a lot of secrets and sins in his past that has left him with a darkness inside him. Drogan now fears that he is losing himself to the darkness and that he will never escape it. The only time he feels the darkness leaving him is when he is with Serena. Drogan has to decide if he is willing to take a chance on the future with Serena or if he is going to allow the darkness to claim him once and for all.

Now Drogan and Serena are going to have to see if they can find a way to conquer the past so that they can have the future they both so desperately want now that they have found each other. If they are going to have a future they are both going to have to trust in the love they have found with each other. Otherwise they will not have the promising future that suddenly seems within their grasp.

This is an excellent story that is the first in a trilogy that is sure to please readers of historical stories. The imagery comes to vivid life as the story unfolds and draws the reader in. This is a story that has several twists that will keep the reader guessing as to what will be revealed next. The plot is well written and definitely worth reading. This one will have readers eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Review by: Christina Greenawalt on Oct. 29, 2011 :
Serena is a witch, one of the few left of her dying kind. She has spent her entire life trying to guard her heart and protect herself from the heartache of the curse that has plagued her people. Lord Drogan is a Knight, a warrior haunted by the darkness of his past. He holds within himself dark secrets of past sins that keep him alone and fighting back the inevitable darkness. Neither has any interest in finding love but fate brings them together in a quest to save the lives of their common friends. Serena has visions of the future and knows what she must do to save the lives of an innocent family. Despite the frailties that come with being a witch, she sets off on a journey with Drogan intent on saving her friends at any cost. But Drogan's undeniable loyalty and kindness along with the overwhelming attraction between them distract them both in ways neither can fathom. Past secrets, new found alliances, and incomparable strength of will pave the road on their incredible journey to stop the evil that has come to claim the lives of their friends as well as Drogan. Love finds a way to creep into the equation however, and carefully formed plans become unraveled as Drogan and Serena fall for one another. To say in the least, this novel was unique in its interpretation of Witches. The characters were well developed and made it easy to grow involved with them and the storyline was interesting and kept me turning the pages. I will say I thought there was a few too many sex scenes but overall I enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the follow up novels.
