Amanda Christensen's muscles ached. Tired from volunteering last night at St. John's Homeless Center, she moved as fast as her body allowed down the dim-lit and empty hospital corridor on the way to her office.
Strange that Colleen hadn't called to cancel. Not at all like her. Working at the Center was totally different without her friend to make things go smoothly.
The odors of floor wax and disinfectant blended into a jarring combination that used to bother her. After ten years on staff, Amanda had almost become accustomed to it.
Her nursing shoes squeaked across the floor, and something shiny glimmered up ahead on the polished linoleum. Some nursing student must have dropped her stethoscope. Time to remind them again to be more careful.
