The techs ran around in a rush as I was led straight through to the other side of the cavernous lab area. "Don't worry about them, it's their job to worry. It's your job to fly," said a voice to my left. "We'll get you to the stars, and you get Humanity another chance at survival. It's what you signed up for."


That's Danny Lefkawitz. Good guy, but always did sound like one of the recruiting adverts to me. I didn't fault him for it today, of all days. We were about to launch the second wave of 'spores' out into the wide hostile universe, and I was going to ride at the front.


These were tough times to be in. Resources across the planet were dwindling rapidly. Crazy programs, just like this one, were scrambling to give any hope at all that Mankind would live to see its fourth millennium since Christ. Environmental exploitation, war, and general mismanagement haven’t given us much to work with at the moment. It took people a long time to wake up. Isn't that always the way though? Once the fire starts licking at communal toes, then people start waking up, banding together.
