It had been a difficult year for Emma and her mother. Emma’s mother’s work hours had been cut and it was harder and harder to make ends meet. They could not afford to keep their cute little house and had to move to an apartment. They searched and searched but could not find an apartment that they could afford that allowed them to have pets. “But Mom,” cried Emma, “Lucky is a member of our family. We have to take her with us.”
Emma’s mother got tears in her eyes and hugged six year old Emma. “Honey, if there was any possible way to keep Lucky you know I would. I’ve asked everyone I know if they would take Lucky, but no one is able to. We’ll just take her back to the shelter where we got her. They’ll find Lucky a new home. She’ll be fine.”
Lucky always slept on Emma’s bed and kept her feet warm. Emma closed the door of her bedroom the night before their move. She couldn’t bear to look at Lucky’s black face and brown button eyes knowing that she’d never see her again. Lucky cried until she fell asleep outside Emma’s bedroom door.
