Article by Nora Blake

If you travel west of Arusha, Tanzania, and past the gateway to the Serengeti, you will eventually find yourself on the rim of Ngorongoro National Conversation Area. The gigantic, inactive volcanic crater became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and with good reason. Spanning about three miles across, it's home to the highest density of animals in Africa, including the "big five": rhinoceros, lion, leopard, elephant, and caped buffalo. Most notably, it's the only conservation area in Tanzania which provides protection for the animals whilst also allowing the Maasai peoples to reside there as well, though they are nomadic and are forbidden from cultivating the land.
