“I can't do that, Bri, but I will make certain I have the right woman the next time.”
“I don't imagine you'll be able to find her.”
“Do you give me your word that you didn't warn her, Bri?”
“I don't lie, Jake. Well, most of the time I don't!” she amended, feeling guilty for fibbing to her parent about her whereabouts. “And I wouldn't lie to you about this,” she stated sincerely.
“I want you to get on home, Bri,” Jake gently scolded. “Near me is no place for you.”
“I'll be the judge of that.”
“No, you won't. I have to set things straight for Tim, and I won't have any peace until I do. You get on home, and don't worry your pretty head about me.”
“Just like that?” She was disappointed.
“Were you expecting this?” Jake took her in his arms and brushed his soft lips across hers in feathery light kisses meant to tantalize.
“Oh, Jake!” She'd never experienced such warmth.
“Oh, Bri!” he teased, and then reluctantly released her. “Minton is just over the hill; catch the stage and go home, honey. You deserve better!”
