A Moment Too Soon
Marj gripped the wheel tightly as the North wind rocked her car. It was Friday evening and she was heading home after a long week of supervising Drivers License offices spread across Western Kansas. She hated this stretch of road, especially in the winter when darkness came early. The prairie offered no trees to block the cross-winds and you could easily go 15 or 20 miles without seeing another car. Cell phone service - forget about it. If you get blown off the road out here in the winter, you could freeze to death before being found.
Headlights appeared in Marj’s mirror. It was “Winky”. Marj called him Winky because his pickup’s left headlight flickered. She hoped to evade his attention, but there wasn't much chance of that. She took the same route home every Friday and the best alternate route would add nearly an hour to a drive that was already over three hours long. It was a case of no good deed going unpunished. In her work as a driver’s license examiner, she had befriended him – he had trouble reading the test questions and the other examiners refused to help. Marj read the questions to him and he was grateful, maybe too grateful. His interest in her had reached the creepy stage.
