“Your life will be all upside down for a while.” That’s what they said. The hand-wringers and shoulder-huggers, doling out platitudes like Halloween candy, none of them comprehending how little they understood Carl’s situation.
They also said, “Your life will get back into a routine again…just give it time.”
To one of these (his boss’s wife, with a matchmaker’s gleam in her eye) Carl replied, “Yuh, time wounds all heels, right?”
Her quizzical expression drove him into a fit of maniacal laughter which even he found frightening, and as she eased away from the lovelorn lunatic he knew if he didn’t stop he would burst into tears, and that if that happened he would never stop crying. The best part of the whole episode was both that she was more frightened when he cut off the laugh mid-cackle, and that he didn’t care.
The worst part about the sudden end of a meaningful relationship is that the cheap platitudes are true. Carl’s life was only upside down for a while—a short while, at that—and then it settled into a new routine. Thinking it would somehow lessen his love of her to get over her so soon he tried to prevent Routine from taking hold of his new single life…fought to keep his life upside down and in disarray. He moved to a new city, got a new job, even met a new woman. In time, these changes formed the backbone of his new routine, yet he never relinquished his first love.
