Another psychic skill granted some sensitives is automatic writing. With this gift, the psychics act as channels for information coming from spirit beings, etheric world intelligences their own Higher Selves. But unlike "trance channeling," in which the spirit entities enter the mediums' energy field and speak through them, automatic writing messages don't come through the voice. They come through the pen, pencil or typewriter.

The psychics or mediums pray, meditate and then enter a light trance before allowing a spirit to intervene with an insightful, meaningful message. The information flows right through the body into the hands, which may pen information, possibly in a language unknown to the psychic. It should be noted that the information coming through need not be from a source outside the psychics. It may come from their subconscious or Superconscious Minds.

When in a light trance, the automatic writers are more open to their Higher Selves and can channel their own higher-minded information clearly, creatively and concisely. Although I personally don't practice automatic writing, I know when I'm writing creatively - with some help from upstairs - and when I'm hacking through a wordy mess, all forced from a tired, conscious mind.

Like automatic writing, the ability to speak in tongues often comes from one's tuning into another source. When people talk in tongues, they make an utterance or loud chatter of incoherent sounds. The sounds - usually rapid, with no recognizable meaning - may come from another earth being, a spirit entity or a space entity. But again, this isn't the trance channeling made popular in the past decade and addressed extensively in a following chapter.
