He was doing the dishes in front of the window. We kept the blinds shut nowadays but he still pretended he could see outside; that he was watching the neighbors walking to and fro. I watched him from the doorway, tapping his feet as he scoured a plate. We’d had a casserole for dinner, one of his creations. He was into cooking now, something he’d never been interested in before.
The laptop was blaring country music, another new interest that had cropped up almost overnight. ‘I’m just a redneck woman!’ He crowed, flicking his head back and forth, the muscles in his arms still working at the leftover casserole on the plate. I tried not to snigger. His hips were swishing to the beat of the song, accompanied by some small quick steps. He looked like a house husband in his loose, low-slung pajama pants.
