We’d just passed the edge of our solar system, and Earth looked like nothing but a pale, blue dot. It had been almost five months since our engines gave out. Two months since we lost contact with Houston. All that was left for us to do was to wait until the food replicators gave out so we could die of starvation. Beth, the science officer and only other human being within roughly 3 billion miles of me, gave us another six months at least. More if she can find a way to reroute our auxiliary power supply. Less if we lost our will to live.
I’d gotten to know Beth as well as one person can possibly get to know someone else. Once we realized that our entire universe, until our inevitable deaths, consists entirely of one another, we started opening up to one another. Opening up in a way that would be unheard of back on Earth. I told her all of my desires, all of my secrets, and she told me hers. Hearing another person’s thoughts uncensored and unbridled by any sort of shame or reluctance is something to behold. I remember the first time she opened up to me, three days after we’d realized we were done for. Beth was just chatting away about her college days, musing on life and the events that brought her to where she was that day.
