I don’t like compassionate vampires.

Maybe it’s because I think monsters should be scary, or maybe I just got tired of pop culture. I decided I was done with dark and whiny pretty-boys when I saw my college friends waiting in line for a Twilight movie. I can’t stand Anne Rice either. Hell, I don’t even like Buffy--and I’m sure that’s a sin somewhere in the gay commandments.

Which is why I was pissed when my mom started dating one.

“You know, I do admire your dignity, Andrew.” He’d composed himself on the couch, watching me sweat through my shirt as I carried heavy boxes in from the rental truck. “It must be such a blow to your ego to move back home in your early twenties.”

“Mid-twenties,” I grunted under the weight of the box. “I’m twenty-five.”

Of course he knew that; he was just trying to get under my skin--so to speak. I’ll admit he looked sexy. His hair was black and straight, framing his face. His eyes were likewise dark, eyebrows dangerously arched, and his lips crimson against pale skin. Marcellus, as he called himself, claimed to be over a hundred years old.
