Tia ran as fast as her legs could take her, the jungle spread out before her, getting farther and farther into the heart of it. She had no idea where she was going. Just that she had to keep running. There was someone behind her, and they wanted her.

She was barefoot, sprinting off twisted roots and rocky ground. The beach lay behind her, looking quite beautiful and majestic. The jungle in front of her only brought dread. They’re getting closer. I can feel them behind me. It sounds like an animal. Whatever it is. It’s too fast. I’m not used to running. I’m not going to get far.

The tree tops started to get thicker, and she watched as the sun disappeared. Only brief glimmers of light shone down to guide her way. The brush was wild, and she desperately ran from overgrowth to overgrowth in order to find some way around it. If she wanted to go any further, she’d need a machete to cut it down, but Tia had nothing.

She stopped, stranded at the wall of wild plants. There was no one behind her. Maybe she had just been scared? Maybe it was an animal, but maybe it wasn’t after her? Maybe it was after something else?

She stared down at her hands. Absolutely nothing in them. Her eyes scanned the jungle around her. Nothing. No weapons to use. Nothing useful for a civilized human being like herself.

Then it grabbed her, snatching a handful of her hair and taking her down. She fell to that sandy ground, looking up at her attacker. He had emerged right from the wild bushes. His outline was enormous.
