Why did she always have to start an argument? Dennis asked himself. Especially in front of their daughter and inexplicably when she was getting on a plane to go visit her parents for a few days. Contrary to what Judy thought, he really did not like to fight with her, but every interaction these days seemed rife with exaggerated emotion and distrust. Even on those rare occasions when things seemed okay between them, a thin veneer of civility and properness covered a deep and frightening layer of ambivalence, as if they were almost to the point of not trying anymore. What worried him most was that Jacqueline was now getting old enough to know what was happening. He could see the pain in his daughter's eyes each time he and Judy really started digging into each other. That look haunted him during quiet alone times. Times like now, driving home from the airport.
