After years of sporadic raids along the coastline of Britain, the Vikings came ashore in AD 865-and stayed. Whether they were invited by King Ethelbert of East Anglia or by King Offa of Mercia to assist in the fighting is a matter for historians to decide. Pushing the borders of the Danegelt, the land of the Vikings, further and further west as they expanded their lands.
