ASCENSION


The room was empty. The evening sun slanted through the grimy window, spotlighting the dust motes floating in the air. My arrival in the doorway was enough to stir up more of the tiny particles, sending them spiralling through the sun's rays as if alarmed at my intrusion.

Dirty yellow paint flaked off the walls like sunburned skin, and the floorboards bore the stains of habitation going back decades. Judging by the smell, some of the dark patches on the floor were recent and animal in origin. Human? Maybe.
