Take Five Easy Steps to Begin

The Easier Way

Within a week of their first meeting, Joe and Annie fell deeply in love with each other. A little over a year later, they became newlyweds.

They both loved to travel, and at various times when they could afford it, they made their way across the country. They traveled at times by train, at other times on foot, and still other times by hitchhiking with all sorts of interesting people who would give the young couple a ride. Travelling together wasn’t the easiest thing for the young married couple and they would periodically get into heated arguments with each other. One or the other had even occasionally threatened to abandon their sojourn altogether. However, their squabbles inevitably gave way to making up, because they really did love each other. They also both loved being on the road and they looked forward to each new leg of their journey as an adventure waiting to unfold.

Annie and Joe each carried a backpack in which they kept all of their possessions for their travels. Joe’s backpack, though, had seen far better days. Over the years, he had kept it together by patching it with string and duct tape. However, after some weeks on their current trip, while waiting for a train, the tired old backpack finally gave way. All of Joe’s belongings suddenly came tumbling out—with muted crashes—onto the train platform.
