ULTRAMARINE AND YELLOW DREAMS
A true story

When I was young, a competition changed my life.
It all started with an announcement in the daily paper: There was to be a contest for students enrolled in Austrian colleges and universities. A selected few would be awarded year long scholarships at schools in the U.S.
The competition was sponsored jointly by the United States Army and by the Institute for International Education in New York.
I was a student at the Linz College of Art and Design, which was located on the same block as our home. I had been dreaming of faraway places, where no one would know me or care what I was doing. Especially of places like ‘Amerika’, about which I had read so much and whose jaunty, seemingly carefree soldiers I saw every day.
I entered the competition (asking my parents permission first, of course). The first requirement was to write an essay, in English. The topic: Our reason for wanting to study in the United States.
