Jackie leapt over a giant puddle and her foot sank into the soft earth. Ignoring the squishy mud between her toes, she raced through the foliage, making haste for home. There was a time when she would have lingered to speak with the trees and plants. But their cries of agony drove her away. The trees were suffering from the saturated soil and the low-lying plants were drowning. Weeks of rain, wind, and storm were taking their toll on her forest.
Her mother had talked about the Storm Giant, but little was known about what conspired high above. She imagined him thrashing around in the clouds as she rushed through the drooping vegetation.
Growing up with the stories, she’d always assumed they were just tales, told to the young to keep them obedient. Now that she was well into her prime years, she wasn’t so certain. It was hard to pluck out the threads of truth from fairy folk stories.
If he existed, she didn’t know what could have angered the god of weather, but he was certainly pouring his wrath down on the valley.
She moved her naked body around a sickly looking tree trunk and ran right into a stranger, knocking them both down on the spongy ground. She looked up into a bestial face; half man, half goat. His harsh features were framed by a bright red mane, running from the end of his chin to the top of his bushy head.
