Lexi glanced over her shoulder, adjusting her shotgun’s strap. She hadn’t seen much on the streets today, but carelessness could still be fatal. She navigated around a snarl of rusting and wrecked cars, scanning her surroundings. Going to a part of the city she wasn’t familiar with made her nervous, but the stores and apartments around her home were becoming dangerously picked over. She needed to find a new source of food and supplies.
Scanning her surroundings, Lexi heard rustling and scratching from a few alleys, but nothing immediately threatening. Most of the zombies had moved out of the city by now in search of people. Even though it was hard living alone, Lexi had stayed in the city because it had seemed safer than vast open tracts of land with nowhere to run or barricade yourself if you came upon a zombie horde. Lexi wasn’t even sure if anybody else was still alive out there. She sighed, increasing her speed as she confirmed that the area was clear. It had been a lot better before Jenna had gotten bitten. There had been so much more to do on all those long, cold nights…
Lexi caught herself fantasizing and snapped back to reality. That kind of carelessness is what had killed Jenna in the first place. There would be plenty of time for reminiscing about Jenna’s soft curves, sweet lips and optimistic dreams when she was back at the base.
